Which Albanian coast should you choose for a holiday, when, and what does a week cost?

Albania has two coasts. The Adriatic, from the Montenegrin border to Vlorë, is flat and sandy: Velipojë and Shëngjin in the north, then the 10 km beach of Durrës and Golem, the closest sea to Tirana (45 km from the airport). Water is shallow and warms early, which suits families with small children, and this is where most Albanians and most Domlivo buyers holiday, so flats are plentiful and the cheapest on the coast. The Ionian, south of Vlorë, is the Riviera: mountains dropping into pebble coves at Dhërmi, Jala and Himarë, then Sarandë facing Corfu and the white beaches of Ksamil. The water is clearer and the season longer, but the road is slower, prices are higher and the villages are quiet from November to April.

Tirana itself is a city break, not a beach: the cheapest short-term rentals in the country, best in spring and autumn, with the coast an hour away by bus.

July and August are full and hot everywhere, with Tirana at 35 °C and the beaches at their busiest and dearest. June and September are the best months on the whole coast: warm sea, half the crowds, rental rates 20-30% below peak. The south swims into October. From November to April the coastal towns are quiet, flights and flats are cheap, and this is when buyers come to look at property; if you plan to winter in Albania, check that the flat has heating, because many were built for summer lets. Short-term rental supply has grown five times since 2020, so outside August there is always choice.

For two people in a rented flat, seven nights at the average listed rate come to about USD 630 in Durrës and USD 805 in Sarandë in high season, USD 500 and USD 640 in June or September. Add the cleaning fee, which averages USD 14 in Tirana and USD 31 in Sarandë, and the municipal overnight tax, which hosts collect: 140 lek a night per person in Tirana guesthouses and flats, 70 lek in Vlorë. Getting there: the airport bus to Durrës is 600 lek, a taxi EUR 30; to Sarandë a taxi is EUR 200 or the bus about 1,220 lek. If you stay a month rather than a week, rent monthly: a beach 1+1 in Durrës is advertised at EUR 400-600 a month in summer, less than two weeks of nightly rates.
